FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Food handler training gives you the knowledge and skills to prevent foodborne illness and protect public health.

In Connecticut, the CDC recorded 24–25 outbreaks each year from 2015–2017, among the highest rates in the nation. Many of these illnesses are linked to food workers unintentionally spreading stomach-related viruses.

By learning proper sanitation, safe food storage, and personal hygiene practices, you’ll not only meet job requirements but also help keep customers safe and reduce disease outbreaks in your community.

Connecticut Food Safety Certification

Under Connecticut Public Health Code, food establishments must have a CFPM within 60 days of opening or when the designated manager changes.

The Food Handler card is for entry-level workers, while the Food Protection Manager Certification is an advanced credential for supervisors and managers responsible for overall food safety compliance.

Connecticut requires certain food establishments to have at least one Qualified Food Operator (QFO) in a full-time supervisory position.

  • Who Needs a QFO: Any food service business classified by the local health department as Class III or Class IV must employ a QFO.
  • Certification: The QFO must pass a state-approved food safety exam, such as the certification course provided by AAA Food Handler, to show they understand safe food handling practices.
  • Coverage Requirement: While the QFO isn’t required to be on-site for more than 30 operating hours per week, the owner or operator must appoint an alternate person in charge to oversee food safety whenever the QFO is absent.
  • Alternate Responsibilities: The designated alternate must document their food safety knowledge and fulfill specific duties to maintain compliance.

Always check with your local health department for any additional or updated training and certification requirements.
