AAA Food Handler provides a county-accepted, ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB)-approved training program that teaches safe food preparation, hygiene, storage, cleaning, and temperature control. Under California Health & Safety Code §113948, food employees must complete this training within 30 days of being hired. Anyone handling food or food-contact items—including servers, cooks, bartenders, bussers, dishwashers, and hosts—must obtain a card, unless exempt. Exempt groups include grocery store employees, retail food vendors, licensed health care facilities, certified farmers’ markets, and individuals with valid Food Protection Manager Certification.

What Are the Requirements Under California Law and Senate Bill 476?

California law mandates that food handlers in Contra Costa County complete an ANAB-accredited food safety course. As of January 1, 2024, SB 476 requires employers to:

  • Pay for training and exam costs.
  • Compensate employees at their regular rate for time spent in training.
  • Excuse employees from normal duties during training or testing.
  • Avoid requiring job applicants to hold a food handler card before hire.
