Know Before You Train

How do I become a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) in Washington?

To become a Certified Food Protection Manager in Washington, you must complete an ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB)-accredited Food Manager Certification program. AAA Food Handler offers a fully online program that includes comprehensive training and an exam designed to meet the Washington Department of Public Health requirements. Upon passing, you will receive your Certified Food Protection Manager Certificate, which is valid for up to five years. The program is available in both English and Spanish, allowing you to learn at your own pace, anytime and anywhere in King County.

What are the Washington Food Safety Regulations?

Washington State follows the Retail Food Code, which aligns with the FDA Food Code. The person in charge of a food establishment must demonstrate knowledge in three main areas:

  • Foodborne disease prevention
  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles
  • Compliance with all state and local requirements listed in the Washington Food Code

By obtaining your Certified Food Protection Manager Certificate through an ANAB-accredited program, such as AAA Food Handler, you meet these regulatory requirements, ensuring your food establishment operates safely and in compliance with the law.

Who Should Get Their Food Manager Certification in Washington?

The person in charge of a food establishment is recommended to obtain certification, but any designated employee may also complete the program. This typically includes restaurant owners, food service managers, executive chefs, or operations managers. Regardless of the role, a certified food manager must always be present while the establishment is operating to ensure compliance with state regulations and promote a safe food environment.

Can I Complete the Washington Food Manager Exam Online?

Yes. The AAA Food Handler’s ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB)-accredited program is fully online. This allows you to complete the entire training and exam from the comfort of your home or workplace. You can start, stop, and resume the course as needed. The online format provides flexibility for busy professionals while still maintaining rigorous standards required for certification.

How Long is the Certified Food Protection Manager Certificate Valid?

Your Certified Food Protection Manager Certificate is valid for up to five years. After this period, you must complete and pass the Food Manager Certification exam again to renew your certification. Maintaining a current certification ensures ongoing compliance with Washington State food safety regulations and demonstrates your commitment to food safety and professional development.

What will I Learn in the Food Manager Training?

The AAA Food Handler program is designed to give you in-depth knowledge of food safety practices and regulations. The course covers:

  • Identification and prevention of foodborne illnesses
  • Proper handling, storage, and preparation of food
  • Sanitation and hygiene practices
  • Implementation of HACCP principles in a food establishment
  • Compliance with Washington State Department of Public Health guidelines

By the end of the program, you will have the skills and knowledge to prevent, minimize, or eliminate food safety risks in your workplace.

How Does Certification Impact my Job Opportunities?

Being a Certified Food Protection Manager can significantly enhance your professional profile. Certified food managers are trusted to oversee food safety programs, train staff, maintain proper temperature controls, and ensure compliance with health regulations. This level of expertise can lead to higher job positions, increased responsibilities, and better pay compared to employees without certification. Employers often prefer or require certification for management-level food service roles.

Can the AAA Food Handler Support Group or Employee Training?

Yes. AAA Food Handler provides group registration tools that allow organizations to enroll multiple employees in the Food Manager Certification program. Employers can track each participant’s progress, manage course completions, and maintain a centralized record of certifications. This feature is particularly useful for restaurants, catering services, and other food establishments that need to ensure all staff are compliant with food safety regulations.

Is the Program Approved by the Washington Department of Public Health?

Yes. The AAA Food Handler’s ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB)-accredited Certified Food Protection Manager program is fully approved by the Washington Department of Public Health. This means that your certificate meets all legal and regulatory requirements to act as the person in charge at your food establishment. Health departments across King County recognize this certification as valid proof of food safety competence.

How Long Does it Take to Complete the Training and Exam?

The course is designed to be efficient and flexible. The training portion takes approximately 4 hours, and the exam takes up to 2 hours. Because the program is online, you can start and stop as needed to fit your schedule. After completing the course and passing the exam, you can print your Certified Food Protection Manager Certificate immediately.

I highly recommend that you take this course. The videos are short and to the point while also being very informative. The end of the lesson review quizzes are short and multiple choice, detailed without being overwhelming. The information in general is easy to follow and understand. I’ve already did the Food Handler, Responsible Alcohol Server and Allergen Certifications through here and I’ve passed all with two at 95% and one at 100% that’s how easy and knowledgeable the courses are.
