Know Before You Train

How do I qualify as a Certified Food Protection Manager in Westchester County?

In Westchester County, food managers must comply with New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) regulations, along with county health department rules. To fulfill this, you’ll need to complete approved food safety coursework. If your employer requires a nationally accredited food manager certification through the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), AAA Food Handler provides an ANAB-accredited Food Protection Manager Certification that can be completed online at your own pace.

Our program prepares you for the Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) exam accredited by the Conference for Food Protection (CFP). Passing this exam confirms you meet nationally recognized standards in food safety oversight.

What are the food safety rules in Westchester County?

Under Article 20-C of the NYS Agriculture and Markets Law, certain food establishments must designate at least one person trained in food safety. The requirement is generally 8 hours of coursework from an NYSDAM-approved provider. While passing a nationally accredited exam is not mandatory at the state level, many employers in Westchester County strongly prefer managers to hold an ANAB-CFP Certified Food Protection Manager certification, as it demonstrates advanced competency.

Local exceptions apply for small retail food stores that:

  • Employ no more than two full-time workers apart from the owner or immediate family.
  • Report less than $3 million in annual sales, unless affiliated with a larger network.

For those operating in Westchester County, checking both state guidelines and county-specific regulations is essential, as county health departments can impose additional requirements beyond NYSDAM’s list.

How long will my certification last in Westchester County?

  • If training is completed without a proctored exam, certificates are typically valid for 2 years.
  • If you pass a nationally accredited ANAB-CFP exam, your certification is generally valid for 5 years.

Employers and county officials may request proof of renewal at set intervals, so keeping documentation up to date is important.

Can I take the ANAB-CFP exam online?

Yes. AAA Food Handler delivers the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) Certified Food Protection Manager exam through an online proctoring service. This allows Westchester County food managers to test remotely while maintaining strict exam security standards.

Who is required to obtain Food Manager Certification Westchester County?

The law requires someone “in charge” of operations to complete the training—this may include owners, kitchen directors, executive chefs, or managers. Employers often extend this requirement to shift leaders or department supervisors to ensure coverage at all times.

What role does a food manager play in protecting safety?

Food Manager Certification Westchester County carry both operational and compliance duties:

  • Monitoring adherence to state and county codes.
  • Training all staff on safe food handling.
  • Enforcing hygienic procedures and correcting unsafe practices.
  • Verifying food sourcing, deliveries, and storage meet required standards.

This responsibility comes with higher earning potential. According to labor data, food service managers in New York average $77,760 per year, with compensation varying by role and establishment size.

Why is Food Protection Manager Certification important in Westchester County?

Foodborne illness remains a major public health concern. Data has shown that Norovirus and Salmonella are leading causes of outbreaks in New York—both of which are preventable when establishments have a trained, ANAB-accredited CFPM overseeing daily operations.

AAA Food Handler ensures Westchester County leaders are equipped with the right knowledge, aligned with ANAB-CFP standards, and compliant with New York State and county expectation

I highly recommend that you take this course. The videos are short and to the point while also being very informative. The end of the lesson review quizzes are short and multiple choice, detailed without being overwhelming. The information in general is easy to follow and understand. I’ve already did the Food Handler, Responsible Alcohol Server and Allergen Certifications through here and I’ve passed all with two at 95% and one at 100% that’s how easy and knowledgeable the courses are.
