California Food Manager Certification

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Food Safety Certification ensures that food workers and managers are trained in safe handling practices. Most food establishments must have a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) who has passed a nationally accredited certification exam through the ANAB and the Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

Hawaii Food Safety

Hawaii uses a Green, Yellow, and Red placard system to show the public how well an establishment complies with food safety laws. Having a trained CFPM helps maintain a green placard.

In Hawaii, food establishments must have at least one certified food handler on-site at all times, according to the Hawaii Department of Health. While the state technically requires only one person per establishment, having your own food handler certificate can make you more attractive to employers and simplify scheduling.

Hawaii accepts food handler certificates from any ANAB-accredited training program. Once you receive your card, provide a copy to your employer so it can be kept on file as proof of compliance during health inspections.

The certification is valid for five years and must be renewed by retaking the accredited exam.

According to Hawaii Administrative Rules (HAR) § 11-50-20(c), the person in charge at a food establishment must demonstrate food safety knowledge by completing a department-approved training program. This includes courses accredited by ANAB, such as Certified Food Protection Manager programs offered by AAA Food Handler.

Hawaii also requires that at least one employee on every shift hold an ANAB-accredited food handler certificate. Food handler certificates focus on day-to-day safe food practices, while food protection manager certification emphasizes managing and overseeing a food safety system.

Because local rules may vary, it’s always best to check with your city or county health department for any additional training or certification requirements.
