Rhode Island Food Allergen Awareness Requirements

Food allergies can cause serious reactions, including life-threatening anaphylaxis. To protect public health, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) requires all food-service establishments to comply with food allergen safety laws under RI General Law 23-20.12-2.

Requirements for Food Establishments:

  • Display a RIDOH-approved allergen awareness poster in staff areas
  • Add a menu notice asking customers to inform staff of any allergies
  • Appoint a trained manager knowledgeable in food allergy prevention

RIDOH offers multilingual food allergen posters and promotes ANSI-accredited Food Safety Manager certification, which includes allergen training. Other industry-approved allergen training courses are also acceptable. RIDOH does not endorse specific providers.
