A Food Handler card is a certificate showing that you’ve completed a state-approved food safety course and passed an exam. In California, most employees who prepare, store, or serve food must obtain a Food Handler card within 30 days of hire.
Food safety certification is official recognition that you have been trained in proper food handling, hygiene, temperature control, cross-contamination prevention, and other safety practices. In California, the most advanced version of this is the Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification.
California requires at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) in each food facility, with certification from a nationally accredited food manager program through the ANAB and the Conference for Food Protection (CFP).
All food employees in California must complete an ANAB accredited food handler training course within 30 days of hire, as required by Health & Safety Code §113948. Some counties, such as Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego, have their own food handler card requirements that take precedence over the state law. Employees must also provide a copy of their certificate to their employer, who is required to keep records on file.
Effective January 1, 2024, Senate Bill 476 (SB 476) shifts the responsibility of training costs from employees to employers. Employers must pay for accredited training, cover related expenses, compensate employees for the time spent on training/testing, excuse them from regular duties during the course or exam, and cannot require applicants to already hold a card as a condition of employment. Food handler cards remain valid for three (3) years.
The Food Handler card covers basic safety for entry-level workers, while the Food Protection Manager Certification is an advanced qualification for supervisors or managers, focusing on compliance, HACCP, and leadership in food safety.

Certified managers ensure employees follow the Food Code, maintain proper storage and cooking methods, oversee cleaning and sanitizing, and inform customers when food items are undercooked. Their leadership is critical to South Dakota food license compliance.

I found it informative, but there were sections with no audio or it felt like it was going a bit slow.
fast and easy
The information given is not overwhelming and actually stuck with me really well. If you pay attention during the course, you’ll do well on the exam.
It was easy i guess
Good training
Pretty easy
when is my certificate going to come in my email
The videos and the occasional interactive areas really helped the information to stick. I will definitely recommend this course to others!
Course was quick and informative
After 20 years of military service, operating around hazardous chemicals and munitions, this was cake.
Wish there were less short videos and more long ones
to long repeats to much but ok
Very helpful training, passed my test.
Despite being long, it’s interactive and keeps you engaged while not sacrificing a single bit of necessary information.
Great course!

I love how understanding and detailed this course is. I was able to absorb so much knowledge and I love how it is at my own pace! 100% recommend!
Learned so much. The interaction was great.
Informative without being drawn out
great course and easy to use
I enjoyed it thorough
Loved it. Easy to understand
Great
It was easy to follow along and train on this information one section at a time.
Easy and very informative
Quick and effective
Covers everything about a restaurant too keep people safe.
The content is helpful and full however some parts were rushed through in delivery.
Good communication, pretty straightforward material.
Good information presented in a simple way. Nice to be able to go back and listen again or reread information. Not as long as I thought it would be!
This was very easy to follow and didn’t take as long as expected
Buggy slideshow / video that is mostly unsynced to audio. At times the same audio would overlap what’s currently playing, making the experience confusing.
Many modules would have audio finish way ahead of the end of the video’s timeline (video would be frozen at this point). Meaning you’d have to wait for the playhead to finish before you can move on to the next module. And with this issue, I often ended up replaying the same module to have a better understanding.
In short, the audio is usually fine but the video lagged so badly making the module at least 3 times as long.
Great Training
This training was well presented and made it easy to stay attentive. Only feedback I have is the little prompt that pops up each time to move onto the next section. It took a bit to pop up and made it an additional step to move and click onto the next session.
