FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

If you want to work in the food industry in Utah, state law requires all food employees to take an approved food handler training course. Beyond being a requirement, this training teaches you the essential practices to keep food safe and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.

Food safety is a serious concern in Utah. For example, the CDC has reported multiple foodborne outbreaks in the state over the years, with fluctuations between 10 and 24 outbreaks annually. By applying the safe handling practices you learn in training, you play a direct role in protecting customers and reducing these incidents.

Utah Food Safety

Yes. The Utah Department of Health approves online training, and the AAA Food Handler program is designed to meet these standards. The online format allows food workers to complete their Utah food safety training on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

The Utah Food Service Sanitation Rule requires at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) in every food service establishment. Passing an ANAB accredited Food Protection Manager Certification exam ensures that someone with supervisory authority can oversee compliance with Utah food safety codes.

In Utah, the food manager certification is valid for five years. Managers must retake and pass the accredited exam every three years to maintain compliance with Utah food safety regulations.

The AAA Food Handler allergen program focuses on the nine major allergens identified by the FDA. It prepares Utah food workers to prevent cross-contact, recognize symptoms of allergic reactions, and apply safe practices that align with Utah food safety rules.

While not required by state law for every food worker, many Utah employers mandate allergen training to improve safety in their establishments. Having an allergen certificate demonstrates a higher standard of Utah food safety compliance.

Utah law requires food establishments to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) with supervisory or management responsibilities on-site, as outlined in the Utah Food Service Sanitation Rule 2-102.12.

Under the Utah Food Safety Manager Certification Act, after completing an approved food manager certification program, you must provide proof of passing the exam to your local health department.

The Utah Department of Health recognizes several approved programs, including the ANSI-CFP accredited certification from AAA Food Handler.

Remember to keep your certification readily available at your establishment since health officers may request to review it at any time.

I was able to complete the training and exam within a few hours. The information was delivered entertainingly, and some points even made me laugh. There was only one question on the exam I felt was poorly worded, but that is my only complaint.

Pretty good. Could be a bit better.

April 21, 2026

A few quiz questions had some ambiguity. I think the very first quiz questions about purchasing salsa from a street vendor for example, where purchasing salsa from a street vendor if perfectly ok if you are taking it home and eating it, and not ok if you are taking it to your restaurant and serving it. Admittedly, this is perhaps overthinking the question, but a simple modification of the question (“for your food business” for example) would clear it up. One quiz question, I believe pertaining to Trichonella, appeared before the content teaching it, but that may be the only instance of a question preceding content. When I went back to review slides, I discovered that I needed to hit “restart” rather than “resume”: some instruction about how to view the coursed slides multiple times for review would be helpful. And it would be most helpful to let folks know before they purchase the course about the technical requirement for taking the exam (phone with Google Meet installed, Google Chrome installed on computer): believe it or not, I had to purchase a new phone to take this exam, as my existing iPhone could only be updated to iOS 15. Those are my quibbles. If the quiz questions are representative of the exam content, I should be well prepared to take and pass the exam, and that is my primary reason for purchasing the course.
