FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

If you want to work in the food industry in Utah, state law requires all food employees to take an approved food handler training course. Beyond being a requirement, this training teaches you the essential practices to keep food safe and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.

Food safety is a serious concern in Utah. For example, the CDC has reported multiple foodborne outbreaks in the state over the years, with fluctuations between 10 and 24 outbreaks annually. By applying the safe handling practices you learn in training, you play a direct role in protecting customers and reducing these incidents.

Utah Food Safety

Yes. The Utah Department of Health approves online training, and the AAA Food Handler program is designed to meet these standards. The online format allows food workers to complete their Utah food safety training on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

The Utah Food Service Sanitation Rule requires at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) in every food service establishment. Passing an ANAB accredited Food Protection Manager Certification exam ensures that someone with supervisory authority can oversee compliance with Utah food safety codes.

In Utah, the food manager certification is valid for five years. Managers must retake and pass the accredited exam every three years to maintain compliance with Utah food safety regulations.

The AAA Food Handler allergen program focuses on the nine major allergens identified by the FDA. It prepares Utah food workers to prevent cross-contact, recognize symptoms of allergic reactions, and apply safe practices that align with Utah food safety rules.

While not required by state law for every food worker, many Utah employers mandate allergen training to improve safety in their establishments. Having an allergen certificate demonstrates a higher standard of Utah food safety compliance.

Utah law requires food establishments to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) with supervisory or management responsibilities on-site, as outlined in the Utah Food Service Sanitation Rule 2-102.12.

Under the Utah Food Safety Manager Certification Act, after completing an approved food manager certification program, you must provide proof of passing the exam to your local health department.

The Utah Department of Health recognizes several approved programs, including the ANSI-CFP accredited certification from AAA Food Handler.

Remember to keep your certification readily available at your establishment since health officers may request to review it at any time.

Important Information

May 8, 2026

I understand that it may be difficult to sit and focus on retaining information in today’s era of “fast learning”, but this information will not only help keep our communities safe, but also our homes. Everything I learned can also reduce the growth of bacteria at home and I know what to be aware of when I’m visiting restaurants/cafes/etc.

Food Manager Certification Course (Online) – Summary & Reflection

May 4, 2026

The Food Manager Certification course provided a thorough understanding of food safety practices, sanitation standards, and regulatory requirements necessary for managing food service operations. Key topics included proper food handling, prevention of cross-contamination, temperature control, personal hygiene, and cleaning and sanitizing procedures. The course also introduced important concepts such as foodborne illnesses and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), emphasizing the responsibility of maintaining a safe and compliant food environment. From a personal perspective, I found the course to be both informative and practical. It reinforced the importance of attention to detail and consistency when it comes to food safety, as even small mistakes can have serious consequences. I especially appreciated learning about real-life scenarios and how to respond to potential risks, which helped me better understand the role of a food manager in protecting public health. Overall, this course strengthened my awareness of food safety standards and gave me confidence in my ability to apply these practices in real-world settings. It also highlighted the importance of leadership and accountability in ensuring that food safety procedures are consistently followed.

Informative and Importance

May 4, 2026

This course is extremely important and informative to keep our families, customers and employees safe, regarding anything dealing with eating food. Food contamination and allergens could cause illness, severe pain and or death. This course is an educational guideline for knowing how to prepare food to serve at home or to the general public. Food must be safe, healthy and free of any type contamination before service. Customers must inform any food establishment of any food allergy that they have and the food establishment must take this information serious. This could be a life or death situation. Food establish must know all of the protocols from the FDA {Food and Drug Administration), USDA (The United Stated Department of Agriculture), CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and The Local Health Department. Food establishments must understand to the causes of Foodborne Illnesses and Foodborne Outbreaks. Preventing the Foodborne Illnesses and Foodborne Outbreaks could mean the difference of an establishment staying operational or shutting down. Hot Water, Cleanliness, Hygiene and adhering to established SOPs and Protocols are essentials in maintaining a Vibrant Food Establishment.

Food Manager Training

May 4, 2026

Easy to follow review. Easy to take at your own pace. Easy to navigate if you want to go back to learn any module. Some recommendations I have are: 1) Allow the user to go back within a module rather than having to wait until a module finishes and restart from the beginning. 2) It would be nice to have a transcript of the modules so that people could study the temperatures better. I understand that we must finish all modules first — but perhaps make available after course completed.

The 9 allergens listed along with their effects and the impact they have on the immune systems was given with examples that was understood.

March 9, 2026

The highlight of this review session for me was the hidden allergens in various food that can leads to Celiac disease as discuss in the lecture and how gluten for example can over time can lead to the damage of the small intestine. It is imperative that PIC trainer and educate staff consistently to reduces acts of contaminating food. I learn a lot from this lecture, and I’m encouraged to train, post and contents to increase awareness respectively. Thank you!
