FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

To become a Certified Food Protection Manager in Wisconsin, you must earn a Wisconsin Food Manager Certification by passing an exam that is accredited by the ANAB and recognized by the Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

Wisconsin Food Manager Certification

Yes. Whether you work in Milwaukee, Dane, Brown, Waukesha, Outagamie, or Racine, your Food Protection Manager Certification is valid statewide as long as it was earned through an ANAB accredited program.

Wisconsin small food operations with five or fewer food handlers may qualify for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) approved Small Operators Recertification Program. To be eligible, the Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) must renew within 90 days of the certification’s expiration. If more than 90 days have passed, a new exam must be taken from a program accredited by the ANAB.

Certified Food Protection Managers are responsible for maintaining food safety logs, managing staff training, and preparing for unannounced inspections, helping ensure safe, efficient operations that meet Wisconsin standards.

Programs accredited by the ANAB meet national quality and testing standards. Without this accreditation, a certification may not be recognized by Wisconsin health departments.

Yes. The certification aligns with CFR § 483.60, making it valid for dietary services in hospitals, nursing homes, and school foodservice programs across Wisconsin.

Under the Wisconsin Food Code, most food establishments—including restaurants, mobile vendors, and temporary food operations—must have at least one certified food manager on staff. This person, whether the owner or a designated “person-in-charge,” is responsible for ensuring safe food handling practices.

To become certified, you must pass a food manager exam from an ANAB-CFP accredited provider approved by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. After passing the exam, you’ll need to submit your certificate of completion and a fee to the state to receive your official certification.

The certification must be clearly posted on-site to show compliance with state regulations. Our ANAB-CFP Accredited Food Protection Manager Certification by AAA Food Handler  is fully approved in Wisconsin and fulfills all these requirements.
