Food Protection Manager Certification helps prevent foodborne illness, ensures compliance, and boosts career opportunities.

The ANAB operates under the American National Standards Institute and works in partnership with the Conference for Food Protection (CFP). Together, they help ensure that food safety training programs meet consistent national standards recognized by state health departments, including those in Minnesota.

Minnesota requires food establishments to follow the state Food Code, which includes having a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) on staff. These rules focus on safe food handling, employee hygiene, and training standards. Completing a program that meets ANAB and Conference for Food Protection (CFP) guidelines helps ensure full compliance.

Minnesota Food Code requires most food establishments to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM). Exempt establishments include special event food stands, food vehicles, portable structures, carts, and that that meet the legal definition of a low-risk food establishment.

Anyone who is becoming a CFPM for the first time has to attend an approved food safety manager course like the one offered by AAA Food Handler.

Once you’ve passed the exam, you need to mail an application and fee to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

The MDH advises that local jurisdictions may have additional requirements. We always recommend checking with your local health department to make sure you’re meeting your obligations.

Food safety in Minnesota is overseen by the Minnesota Department of Health, Environmental Health Division. For questions about the state food code, compliance requirements, or Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) regulations, contact:
