FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

You can earn your Ohio food handler certificate by completing an online Ohio food safety course through AAA Food Handler. The course takes about 1.5 hours and includes a final exam. Once you pass, you can instantly download and print your certificate.

Ohio Food Safety

In Ohio, most food handler certificates are valid for a period of three years. However, some counties or employers may require earlier renewal. Always confirm with your local health department for specific rules.

Ohio law does not mandate exactly which employee must hold the Food Protection Manager Certification. Typically, businesses assign this responsibility to an owner, executive manager, or head chef to ensure compliance.

Since every shift must have a certified Person-in-Charge (PIC), this requirement often applies to shift managers, department managers, or other supervisory staff.

Some employers choose to have shift managers or additional staff obtain the Manager Certification, even though it goes beyond the state’s minimum requirement. Keep in mind that anyone who earns a Manager Certification automatically satisfies the PIC Certification requirement as well.

To earn the Ohio food manager certification, you must complete the state-approved training, pass the online proctored exam, and download your certificate. This fulfills Ohio’s Level 2 food safety requirement for managers.

Food allergen training is an important part of Ohio food safety. The training teaches staff how to identify common allergens, prevent cross-contact, and respond safely if a customer experiences an allergic reaction.

Any employee who prepares, serves, or handles food in Ohio should complete allergen training. This includes cooks, servers, bartenders, and managers. Employers often require it to better protect customers with food allergies.

Yes. AAA Food Handler programs meet Ohio food safety requirements and are widely accepted by employers statewide, including restaurants, grocery stores, schools, and catering services.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) rule 3701-21-25 requires foodservice operations (such as restaurants) and retail food establishments (such as grocery stores) to meet two levels of food protection certification.

  • Person-in-Charge (PIC) Certification (formerly Level One):
Every food establishment, regardless of risk level (I, II, III, or IV), must have at least one person with PIC Certification present during each shift. This is obtained by completing an approved training course through a recognized provider, such as AAA Food Handler’s Ohio Level One / PIC training.
  • Manager Certification (formerly Level Two):
Establishments with risk levels III or IV must also have at least one employee certified as a Food Protection Manager. This involves completing an approved in-depth training program and passing a proctored exam. Once completed, the certification must be submitted to the ODH for approval.

By meeting these requirements, Ohio food establishments ensure compliance with state law and help maintain high standards of food safety.

Not as bad as I thought

November 21, 2025

I have had my food handlers card in the past and went through a different website to obtain it. I got this website from my current supervisor and honestly this website was very informative. Considering that this is women owned, things are explained in a good detail. 1.5 hours of this does seem long but it is not. I learned some new information from the last time I took it and also the final exam was 40 questions. Final exam questions were fairly simple and reflected everything that was talked about.

Pretty interesting

November 21, 2025

Definitely interesting. I’ve had to take this course several times over my life and this one kept my attention well. The narrator used had a good voice and having to interact at times kept me on my toes. I liked it overall and will be back if available when it is time to do it again.

Very eye-opening and helpful

November 21, 2025

The information makes one aware of how to protect yourself and your loved ones from needless illnesses by using preventive measures, common sense and paying attention to the potetntial hazards and cross contamination when it comes to handing food. This info also keeps me alert when I am being served in a restaurant. Just recently, I was at a restaurant, and was served my meal with white bread instead of pita bread. I brought it to the server’s attention, he apologized and he grabbed the two pieces of bread off my plate. We thought that was kind of weird, but at least he was nice about it, and wearing gloves. However, he touched other things with his gloves, since he was busy serving other people. If I knew then, that that would’ve been a violation, I think I would’ve told the manager, instead of letting it go. Even though some of this info is common sense, it is helpful to bring the topic up with an explanation to back up the standards. Otherwise, it is very easy to let things slide. Also, there are specific info that I wasn’t aware of, like how many degrees should you receive food when hot or when cold. Overall, this course was very insightful. I kept thinking my whole family should take this course, so we can all be on the same page. I also feel the need to practice these guidelines regularly in my own home kitchen.
